A Prayer as We Approach Christmas
by The Rev. Chris McPeak
I don’t know about you, but I am feeling wildly unprepared for Christmas. It’s such a busy time and yet nothing seems to get checked off the list. I don’t have presents yet for everyone yet. I have ideas for Christmas Eve sermons, but nothing is finalized. We’ve also found it a challenge in a new home finding where to put all of the decorations. We got the majority up and then haven’t had time to finish. And yet, what I long for the most is to sit and take it all in: the flickering of the Advent Wreath, the gentle light of the tree, smells of pine, images of Mary and her baby.
The other day I stumbled upon a prayer written by Henri Nouwen that encapsulates all that I have been feeling and yearning for in the busyness of life. It brings me comfort during these final days of Advent. I hope it will help you, too.
Lord Jesus,
Master of both the light and the darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparations for Christmas.
We who have so much to do and seek quiet spaces to hear your voice each day,
We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us.
We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of your kingdom.
We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of your presence.
We are your people, walking in darkness, yet seeking the light.
To you we say, “Come Lord Jesus!’
Amen.
